Daily calorie counting

diet.jpgEveryone is made different, and for that very reason it is very inaccurate to be able to count your daily calorie needs, as they are subject to the metabolic rate of an individual. The metabolic rate determines how much calories we need and we can burn so as to avoid calorie overload. Most calorie calculators will have to at first determine the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) of an individual. BMR is the amount of energy that your body spends everyday in its resting condition, i.e. if you were on the bed all day long, what is the amount of calories expended by the body in a situation like that. It is the calories used for the most basic of our function as an organism. Other terms used for the same information are RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) and REE (Resting Energy Expenditure).

After the estimate of the BMR, the other activity expenditures are applied, which are the main errors in calculating the metabolic rate, as the number of calories depends on the metabolic rate while doing those activities, e.g. if a 10 minute jog burns 100 calories for you, it might burn 200 for your neighbor. Thus this is where it gets difficult to count the calories that you burn.

One formula, which can be used to calculate calories, is The Mifflin-St Jeor.

Men
10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) + 5

Women
10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) - 161.

Lean Mass Formula

For this you have to know your lean mass.

Men & Women
19.7 * Fat Free Mass + 413

Where Fat Free Mass = Weight - (Body Fat Percentage * Weight).

The Harry benedict formula

Men
66.5 + (13.75 X weight in kg) + (5.003 X height in cm) - (6.775 X age in years)

Women
655.1 + (9.563 X weight in kg) + (1.85 X height in cm) - (4.676 X age in years)
