Weight Loss Drugs
In the fast paced world today where there is no time to exercise but there is a dire need to follow the “thin-is-in” mantra, weight loss drugs are seen by many as a panacea for all problems! Many a companies are coming forth with such drugs every other day aiming to tap the potential segment desperate for this easy way out to lose weight.
These drugs are either prescription drugs, such as Xenical (orbital), Meridia (sibutramine), and phentermine. or over-the-counter medications, which are usually the dietary supplements. But do they really help?
Experts say that these drugs alone do not give the desired results. They have to be coupled with regular exercises, healthy eating habits, and the results are modest and not drastic, which usually vary from person to person. They are usually not prescribed to every overweight person, but to those with severe obesity and weight gains causing health hazards, the reason being that these drugs have some common side-effects such as high-blood pressure, insomnia, constipation, diarrhea etc.
Weight loss drugs are no magic pills and can cause more damage than gain to a person if taken in desperation and without thorough check-up with ones doctor. Factors such as the person’s history as to weight problems, present lifestyle, risks involved, side-effects of the medication, any other medication being taken by the person are of utmost importance which needs to be taken into account while prescribing these drugs and their dosage.
However, the ‘no-pain-no-gain’ mantra still remains as the bottom-line and no pill or drug can substitute the conventional methods of exercising and a healthy diet to rid a person of his weight problems. They are, in fact, no panacea for all weight issues, but only a catalyst to enable those with severe weight problems to get started!
